In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam has confirmed that the carrier will offer an unlimited data plan for the iPhone for $30 a month on top of Verizon’s monthly voice plans.
“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot, Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T.”
This confirms days of speculation after the New York media event that Verizon would offer an unlimited data plan as a trump card to entice new customers to switch from AT&T, as the Dallas-based competitor does not offer an unlimited data plan for the iPhone to new customers after realigning its data plans last year in order to offer tethering and ease years of network strain.
Verizon’s version of the iPhone 4 will be offered to existing customers on February 3rd, with the wider launch set for February 10th. Pricing is set at $199.99 for the 16GB version and $299.99 for the 32GB version.
Update: The Wall Street Journal has updated the original article to add that McLowell later stated that the unlimited data plan would be a promotional offer and that the carrier would move back to tiered data access plans in the future.
