In an unexpected development today, UTStarcom officially released an AKU 3.3 update for the Verizon XV6700. The XV6700 is still current in Verizon Wireless’s device lineup, set to be replaced next month with the XV6800 (identical to the PPC-6800 Mogul on Sprint).
This update brings the latest service pack updates from Microsoft, and brings the XV6700 to the latest release of Windows Mobile 5.0. PhoneNews.com covered previously UTStarcom’s refusal in the past to offer AKU 3 upgrades for their devices. It is not known at this time if the Sprint PPC-6700 will similarly be updated. Hackers in recent months have released unofficial builds of both AKU 3 and a full upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.0 for the PPC-6700 and XV6700.
