Verizon Wireless gave us a pre-release look at the Samsung Juke. The Juke is a new take on the swivel phone, with emphasis on being as thin and slim as possible. To our surprise, it manages to do just that. Read more for the first-look review.

The Juke is meant to be a very high-end phone, despite at first looks its small screen. From A2DP Stereo Bluetooth to VZ Navigator support. Here’s how it looks compared to a few other Verizon phones (and an iPhone).
The interface? Verizon allowed Juke to deviate a bit from the typical VZW UI. But, not as much as you were thinking… the typical ugly black bars are still in-place, the menus however have been re-done for viewabiltiy… because the screen is much longer than it is wide. Here’s a couple of the typically blurry UI shots.
How does the phone feel overall? Quite well actually. But, the headache starts in features.
The phone is 1xRTT-only, and aside from Get-it-Now, has all data services disabled. That means no web browser. And, because it lacks EV-DO, no V CAST Music or Video. The Juke instead uses Samsung’s media player, which has to be customized just for Juke (as Samsung lacks other music phones without EV-DO).

This means that the Juke is not going to be an attractive option for high-end users that crave data. So who is it going to be for? That’s a hard question to answer… it appears to be for people that want a stylish phone with high-end music playback.
What comes with the Juke? Pretty much what you’d demand from any other high-end phone, namely, stereo (wired) headphones, and a USB cable for syncing. In short, if you’re looking for if you are a savvy phone user. We’re just not sure that the Juke could ever hit that market.
Unfortunately, we’re left only being able to suggest Juke to those that are “emerging” high-end phone users… this is a great phone if you have friends and family that want to use GPS navigation, and want to start listening to music on their phones. But, if you already are doing that, you’re probably checking out a web page, or watching a video, or playing a mobile game… and Juke is either hindered, or unable to do any of these things properly.
Really, we’re left asking from Juke for just a bit more. Juke would be a great phone, something that would slip in nicely aside an iPhone as a second line of service… unfortunately, with no EV-DO, no V CAST Video, no V CAST Music, no Mobile Web browser… it’s not music to our ears. We’re not feeling “juked” by the Juke… but it obviously is not meant to be the high-end phone that its style may imply.

Update: Verizon has informed us that the Juke cannot be used as a modem, despite having NationalAccess data in the phone for Get-it-Now. The article has been updated to reflect this correction.
