Despite Motorola internal documents which pointed to Android 2.1 updates for CLIQ and CLIQ XT this summer, Motorola has indicated that there will be considerable delays beyond that date.
Motorola representatives have confirmed that the update will be released “as soon as possible”, but indicated that the update would not be released this summer.
The news comes as Motorola focuses Android update attention on their most high-end devices. After being upgraded to Android 2.1, the company has already committed to upgrading the Motorola Droid and Milestone to Android 2.2. The company’s strategy appears to be focus upgrade efforts on highest-end devices, and build reputations with customers that most closely pay attention to software updates.
By updating the Motorola Droid consistently, Motorola is able to distance itself from competitors such as HTC. HTC has indicated that the HTC Hero and Droid Eris, the latter being released the same day as the Droid, will not be upgraded to Android 2.2.
This news comes within a month of Apple discontinuing major firmware updates for the original iPhone. No other smartphone manufacturer has matched Apple’s four year record for issuing consistent software updates to a device. This, despite licensing from Microsoft and other smartphone vendors that have permitted such upgrades in terms of both technical requirements and legal aspects.
While the prolonged delay for Android updates makes future updates questionable, Motorola’s low-end phones are setting a pace higher than the industry standard. After committing to Android 2.1 for the T-Mobile G1 by Google, and Samsung promising Android 2.0 for the Behold II… neither has seen upgrades to those versions in an official capacity.
So a $500 phone is NOT a “High End Device” ?

Ok this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.. I was ok for a few more weeks delay.. but all summer! Plus Moto does not consider this a high end device. yes technology changes by the minute and when something new is released its obsolete I get that.. but I paid $400.00 for this phone!!!! Neseattle, all smartphones bear astronomically inflated full retail prices. This is because manufacturers can get similar amounts of money in subsidies, and carriers want full retail prices high in order to maintain the contract status quo in America today.
The CLIQ XT is free with contract from most online retailers. That makes it not a high-end smartphone.
Motorola, go to hell.

@ Christopher: usually, there is nothing free in this world. If you don’t pay at the front door for your Cliq, you pay for it through your contract. It is still an expensive phone, but useless and outdated due to the carelessness of Motorola.
Its simple, TMobile & Motorola lost it… If I am not getting a descent customer service while using the Cliq; I am not switching to the G1 or the Droid X. I will be heading to HTC which we all know has given its customer up-to-date devices whenever the technology becomes available. Thanks God my contract expires on July…

I am truly upset to know that I will not be getting the OTA update Ive been already waiting for for so long. This is my first Motorola phone and first Android device and I promise you this will be my last one. I’m switching to Sprint when this stupid contract is over and I’m getting me the EVO. I loved my Cliq until I was feed too many lies and waited so long for this update. I’m too the point where I just wanna smash this piece of shit on the floor to billions of piece.
I guess we are better off than the folks who bought the Kin, but to be honest, part of the sell on the cliq xt was that the update would be out in a few weeks, then the issues would be resolved. We pulled the trigger on this phone for this reason.
We could have waited a few weeks and got the mytouch slide, and now I wish we would of.
I don’t wish to wait all summer for this update.

That’s why I have stuck by htc this whole time. Htc has always had a better android system than motorola. Htc sense beats moto anytime. I will never buy a motorola android phone.

Wow people are very passionate over their phones. As long as the phone functions I am happy and if you reeeaaaly cant wait you can update yourself go to youtube will walk u thru. But neways this is all new to the carriers and manufacturers it will take a little time to get a rhythm going on updates. Once this is accomplished I am sure something else will be out and that my friends is the curse of technology. Though not for porn I really want flash too 😉
