Motorola Announces “MOTO X” Flagship Smartphone

By Humberto Saabedra on August 1, 2013

Motorola has officially announced its first next-generation flagship device since becoming a part of Google proper in the Moto X Android smartphone.

Moto X

While this phone will be Motorola’s flagship going forward, the technical specifications are shared with the already previously announced Motorola Droid series exclusive to Verizon Wireless. The biggest difference between the Motorola Moto X and the Droid series will be the forthcoming launch of the Moto Maker design service, the linchpin around the “designed for you” tagline and marketing campaign.

When it launches later this Summer with the Moto X, the Moto Maker design service will allow customers to customize the bodyshell of the phone with up to 2,200 unique combinations of materials and finishes as well as further customization through the addition of custom engraving, custom wallpapers, icons, home screen, and even a custom catchphrase for the Touchless Control hands-free functionality, ensuring that every phone ordered through the design service will be a personalized reflection of each owner.

The service will launch first with AT&T support and an exclusive 32GB variant, with expansion to other carriers in the coming months as the carriers launch their respective versions. Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular have all announced plans to launch the Moto X following AT&T’s launch later this month with releases within the next 2 months. The specifications are below:

  • Android 4.2
  • 4.7-inch 720p display at 316ppi
  • 16/32GB internal memory without microSD expansion
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro at 1.7GHz with additional Motorola X8 co-processors for voice control/sensor control and 2GB RAM
  • 10.2 megapixel main camera with flash/2.0 megapixel front facing camera
  • Multi-band LTE with HSPA/EVDO Rev A support for each respective carrier
  • NFC and wireless charging support
  • 50GB of included Google Drive space when purchased for 2 years on top of standard 15GB access

The phone will be sold for $199/$249 with a new agreement depending on storage option selected, with no immediate word on an unlocked version.
