Verizon Wireless has approved a firmware update for the HTC Touch Pro, which makes three major improvements.
The update, firmware version 1.08, adds the long-awaited unlocked GPS support. PhoneNews.com previously reported that Verizon agreed to unlock GPS on the Samsung Saga, Samsung Omnia, and HTC Touch Pro. This is the first of three official updates that will make good on that promise, made last year.
PhoneNews.com has confirmed that the update enables standard GPS functionality in Google Maps, as well as Windows Live Search for Mobile.
In addition, the update adds Visual Voicemail support to the Touch Pro. The Samsung Omnia was the first device to add Visual Voicemail. But, like all other Verizon devices, Visual Voicemail will cost $3/month.
Finally, the update adds EVRC-B codec support. EVRC-B is a second revision to the EVRC voice calling codec, and is part of Qualcomm’s fourth generation of voice codecs (4GV). It improves the ability for calls to be managed on the network, in high-demand situations.
PhoneNews.com is offering the firmware update, ahead of its availability on Verizon’s servers. We can verify that the update has been approved by all relevant parties (PCD, HTC, and Verizon). Jump over to the Phone Encyclopedia page, linked below, to download the update.

Played around with the update for awhile now.
GPS is completely autonomous. You can even use it in Airplane Mode. The QuickGPS app is also included, in case you are off network and need a fast GPS lock. Good idea just to tell it to auto-update so you always have the latest feed.
I would be interested in knowing if Google Maps and Windows Live now work with their “use Windows default GPS” setting, or if they both still need to be manually configured to com4: and 4800 baud? A “flaw” (possibly too strong of a word) that the early workarounds all had.
The GPS driver always routes through the Windows Intermediary Driver, so you can use the Windows defaults. No COM setting required.
It is good to know that VZW got the GPS driver to finally route through the Windows Intermediary Driver correctly with this update. Thanks.

But does it fix the bug where it won’t ring till the third ring or more?
That’s not a bug. It a feature.
The first “ring” is a silent notification, with only the LED flashing, to give you the opportunity to answer your phone without everyone around you getting a giggle over your weird ringtone.
Josh, I think you’re smoking something. It was just one ring then maybe, but 3 full rings is a bug.
I can’t find anything about this on the verizon site. I still think the whole Verizon unlocking gps thing is a hoax. I won’t believe it till I can get it from the verizon site. I certainly not going to install some random ROM downloaded from a warez site on my phone.

jj, you are the one who obviously can’t count.
It is just one ring.
I have the VZW phone, and there is just one LED flash, and then starting with the second ring, it plays the ringtone.
People, do youselves a favor and download the update directly from the manuf. site as the download just appeared on their site today. The link above goes to a slightly older version. I don’t know if there is a change in functionality, but v.1.08 download was available at least as far back as 5/15/09.
Then it appears that the download was removed from the manuf’s site until today.
Here’s the link on the manuf. site:

Yeah, on a freshly cold reset phone it rings a little quicker, but if you have about 100 contacts, it’s not until after the third ring. It’s a well documented problem with pretty much all the HTC Touch phones, just google for delayed ring over on pdaphonehome or xda-developers. You can adjust the slot index and it will start ringing a little sooner sometimes.

Jdoh, we reported on that latest development, and removed MR1 1.0 from our site. The download link now transfers to a file, pointing to the latest article:

Unfortunately, at this late hour, PCD has pulled MR1 v2.0 as well, leaving no update for the Touch Pro as both certified and online for download. We are continuing to try to get an answer from PCD, HTC, or Verizon as to the status of the update. We’ll keep everyone posted on the front page (and RSS, of course).

I downloaded MR1 V2.0 last night. GPS works with Microsoft Live Search. It won’t work with Google Maps. Couldn’t find any other problems. I don’t know why they pulled it.
