Verizon this week has soft-launched the Nokia 6305i. The Nokia 6305i deviates from Nokia’s previous offerings to deliver EV-DO and V Cast services, however, in order to do, have outsourced the design of the device to Pantech. The device also deviates from Nokia designs in using Pantech’s slider form-factor, and adds a 1.3 megapixel camera.
The partnership between Pantech and Nokia is a stop-gap approach for the CDMA phone maker. Nokia lacks a contracted EV-DO chipset to use with their devices, opting earlier to invest heavily in their own 1xRTT chipset with licensing from Qualcomm. Because Verizon phones carry the Verizon BREW UI, Nokia can rebrand Pantech units without needing to compromise Nokia properties such as Series 40.Nokia will switch to Nokia CDMA phones manufactured in partnership with Sanyo later this year. The 6305i is currently not available from Verizon Wireless directly, but is available from Verizon’s third-party retailers.
