T-Mobile tonight flipped the switch, and enabled 3G UMTS/HSPA coverage in the Sacramento Valley. PhoneNews.com confirmed this tonight with our T-Mobile G1 (previously reviewed).
This completes T-Mobile’s proposed 3G launch coverage, of cities which will have 3G coverage ahead of the launch of the G1. While existing customers can pre-order a G1, T-Mobile has indicated that initially, the G1 will only be sold at retail stores in areas where T-Mobile has 3G coverage. This ensures that the limited supplies directed to retail, will be concentrated in areas where the G1 can be fully utilized.
As such, no new customer will be able to buy a G1 on launch day, unless they are in a 3G coverage area.
