Starr Wireless has had a very checkered past. From starting as being the only carrier with an online customer service page that contained the actual social security numbers of their customers (back when they were a Sprint MVNO) to their latest reincarnation of ROCKITtalk.
ROCKITtalk was initially a TDMA/GSM MVNO using AT&T/Cingular wireless and Starr’s “portable MVNO platform”. The history of ROCKITtalk is extremely suspect. ROCKITtalk became Americas PCS which merged with Starr Wireless services when AT&T Wireless and Cingular merged. ROCKITtalk was then re-launched as a GSM only service as Americas PCS continued with CDMA. Most recently, ROCKITtalk was shut down by Cingular (or Starr, Starr has not officially commented on the reason for the shutdown).
This week, ROCKITtalk returned, as a CDMA service. Using Verizon Wireless’ network, ROCKITtalk offers unlimited calling for $99/month, and claims that text messaging and wireless internet will be available “soon”.
However, the service is extremely questionable. Starr does not reference their name (or America’s PCS, their alternative name) anywhere on the web site. In fact, the site only has two links, one for dealers, and one for transitioning (cancelled) GSM service to CDMA. The latter link generates a Page Not Found error.
