Yes, there are rumors of Sprint and Nextel merging, or Sprint buying Nextel. But… Sprint mixing with another carrier has been a constant rumor since 3G went on the radar (and even before that).
The story behind the story is that Sprint is in a position of dominance, not a product to be consumed by another carrier. Why is this important?
Apple for years was rumored in its darkest hours to be going out of business, or be bought by some PC maker… biographies today confirm they were completely false. Today, Apple is rumored to be replacing other companies’ entire PC maker’s divisions, or even buying its own PC division. The rumor isn’t the point, the shadows they cast are.
Sprint is now under the shadow of being viable… and while another rumor may come or not, Sprint zealots should find comfort in knowing that Sprint is no longer an item, but a company that wants items.
