Well, that was a short-lived rumor, now it’s the new reality…
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint and Nextel have agreed to officially pursue merger. Sprint will assimilate Nextel into “The New Sprint” at a tentative cost of 1.3 Nextel shares for every one Sprint share. Sprint will also spin off its landline business into a separate company.
The combined company, while still number three in terms of customer strength, would be within single (millions) of digits between it and both Cingular and Verizon.
