Report: Verizon to Ship Samsung Galaxy S II in July (Updated)

Update: Computerworld has corrected its original report, citing a miscommunication between the reporter and the representative who was making a reference to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 being shipped in July and not the Galaxy S II, which has yet to be slated by the carrier.

According to a report filed by Computerworld, Verizon is preparing to launch the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S in the S II in July, following its European and Asian launches that are slated for this week into the rest of the month. The report cites an email from an unnamed Verizon PR rep confirming that the carrier does plan to launch the Galaxy S II this Summer in July, but that no date has been set. The Verizon variant of the Galaxy S II is expected to carry the Samsung Galaxy S II “Function” branding and is expected to retail between $250-$300 after new 2 year agreement.

The Samsung Galaxy S II is Samsung’s newest flagship Android smartphone with its new Super AMOLED plus display technology inside the 4.27-inch display, quadband GSM/EDGE, quadband HSPA at 21Mbps, dual-core Exynos 1GHz processor, GPS, Wi-Fi N and FM radio with RDS support. It will also feature an 8.0 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture, auto-focus and flash. The front facing camera is a 2.0 megapixel unit with no known resolution for video capture. DLNA for media sharing is also on board with a choice between 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage plus a microSD slot.

The Galaxy S II will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and includes a suite of Samsung specific software, such as TouchWiz, Social Hub, Media Hub, Readers Hub, and Game Hub. Samsung has also added enterprise features, such as device encryption, Cisco VPN software, Sybase’s Afaria device manager, Cisco WebEx and Cisco’s VoIP application. It will also support NFC, but the feature will be left up to individual carriers to enable for specific applications.
