Oracle has filed suit against Google for what it claims are violations of select patents concerning the Java runtime. The software solutions developer recently completed the acquisition of Java developer Sun Microsystems earlier this year.
The violations in question center on seven specific patents held by Oracle that it claims Google has violated along with the hiring away of developers and copyright infringement. Google’s Android uses the Dalvik runtime, which is an open source variant of the Java runtime.
For its part Google has released the following statement regarding the suit:
We are disappointed Oracle has chosen to attack both Google and the open-source Java community with this baseless lawsuit. The open-source Java community goes beyond any one corporation and works every day to make the web a better place. We will strongly defend open-source standards and will continue to work with the industry to develop the Android platform.
