Mozilla Releases Desktop Builds and Source for Mozilla OS, First Images Surface

By Humberto Saabedra on July 19, 2012

Ahead of its intended release next year primarily as a carrier-backed smartphone operating system alternative to Android and iOS, Mozilla has officially released desktop builds and source code for its newly rebranded Mozilla OS, previously known as Boot to Gecko. The desktop builds are available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, with source being made available for developers to deploy on other types of systems.

The wiki for the project does note that the desktop builds are specifically meant for developers that plan to work with Mozilla OS in the future, as the desktop builds are intentionally left incomplete and require the binding of the companion Gaia user interface in order for the desktop builds to work as intended, with full instructions provided.

In related news, Mozilla and Telefonica have unveiled the first images of the Gaia user interface for Mozilla OS on smartphones, with the goal to demonstrate what the user interface will look like when the first devices launch next year. A selection of examples is found below.

The reveal of the first images of Mozilla OS follows recent announcements regarding the operating system confirming carrier support from Deutsche Telekom as well as support by American carrier Sprint, reflecting the increased level of commitment for the nascent operating system heavily backed by Spanish telecom conglomerate Telefonica.
