Motorola has lost a patent infringement suit brought against it by imaging products manufacturer Fujifilm in 2012 whereby the Japanese company asserted that the then-American smartphone manufacturer infringed on four of its imaging patents by implementing them without the necessary licensing. During the trial, three of Fujifilm’s patents were invalidated, but the fourth, a patent related to converting color images to monochrome images was allowed to stand.
Because the fourth patent was allowed to stand and found to have been infringed by the jury, Motorola will have to pay Fujifilm $10.2 million in damages, which is a substantial reduction from the initial $40 million that Fujifilm was seeking when it filed the suit. Motorola has issued the following statement regarding the decision:
“We are pleased with the verdict related to three out of the four patents and are evaluating our options on the one patent on which we did not prevail.”
