Motorola Confirms Android 3.2 Rollout for Xoom Wi-Fi

By Humberto Saabedra on July 14, 2011

Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi

Motorola has recently confirmed via Twitter that it has started to rollout the long-awaited Android 3.2 update for the Android Honeycomb tablet. This makes the XOOM Wi-Fi one of the first Android tablets to receive the update ahead of the official hardware rollout later this Fall.

Motorola has yet to confirm a timeline for the update on the XOOM 4G, its CDMA tablet for Verizon that was later upgraded to LTE via a mail-in (free) upgrade.

On the XOOM, the update will enable the inactive microSDHC slot while adding a new app zooming function for unoptimized apps that will either stretch or zoom them to fill the display, much like the functionality on the iPad.

While Android 3.2 is an important upgrade for the flailing XOOM, the device still struggles with sales. Android 3.2 is not expected to help much, it’s primary feature is the addition of support for seven-inch tablets. Seven-inch tablets have been stuck at Android 2.3, Gingerbread, due to the lack of UI support for the smaller screen size. With the release of Android 3.2, the XOOM will face even more competition from smaller, cheaper seven-inch tablets.
