After two weeks of testimony, a jury has declared a mistrial in the case between patent holding firm Intellectual Ventures and Motorola Mobility regarding patents held by the patent firm that it asserted were implemented in Android and Google Play. What made the case initially interesting to outside observers and the press when the suit was originally filed in late 2011 was the fact that Google was a previous investor in Intellectual Ventures previous to its Motorola Mobility purchase.
The mistrial was declared owing to the jury being unable to reach a unanimous verdict according to a statement posted on Intellectual Ventures own site. The case will be retried in April, though many are now wondering how the purchase of Motorola Mobility by Lenovo will now affect the case, as Google retained the majority of Motorola’s patent portfolio in the sale to Lenovo. Intellectual Ventures also has another patent infringement case against Motorola that was filed in late 2013 that will go to trial in November in Florida.
