Qualcomm and Nortel today announced that they had doubled their past speed gained by HSDPA. The data-addon to UMTS Cingular is deploying previously held a maximum speed of 7.2 megabits, up from 3.6 mbps currently deployed on Cingular’s network. The faster speed will be achieved with new Class 8 hardware, compared to the Class 6 currently deployed. Qualcomm and Nortel hope to double this again with Class 10, which runs at a theoretical speed of 14.4 mbps.
