Google has confirmed higher than expected demand for its Project Fi mobile service and as a result, service invites are being sent out at a much slower rate than the company expected. Unfortunately, this also means that some won’t have their invite requests approved until later this Summer as a result:
“Over the past few weeks, we’ve been happy to bring the first customers onto Project Fi and the initial feedback has been very positive. We’re sending invites as quickly as we can, while ensuring a high-quality experience. Given the number of requests we’ve received, we currently estimate that it will take until mid-summer to get to everyone.”
Google is also promising to roll out a status tool for those that requested an invite to check the status of their request. Project Fi was announced earlier this month as Google’s mobile service testbed. The service requires the Motorola Nexus 6 and runs off of both T-Mobile’s and Sprint’s cellular networks, with dynamic switching between them depending on which network features the most available coverage. Data is priced at $10/GB and any unused data is refunded as a service credit.
