Recent leaks of Verizon Wireless EOL lists have placed the HTC Droid Incredible as being poised to be discontinued. This is not a fully accurate depiction.
The Droid Incredible has suffered from launch due to an AMOLED shortage. HTC has struggled to meet demand for AMOLEDs as the display technology expanded beyond the niche Nexus One. HTC has said recently that some AMOLED models would be downgraded to “Super TFT” displays. However, it was not clear which phones would be downgraded, until now.
The 3.7-inch Droid Incredible took the most demanding toll on production quotas, creating the longest backorders of affected devices. As such, it will be downgraded to the high-quality TFT display.
In doing so, Verizon will have to replace the SKU and notify customers that the Droid Incredible coming next month, is not the same Droid Incredible being sold today. This will be bold markings on the product packaging, as well as on marketing, literature, and possibly even advertisements.
It will also likely include Android 2.2, Froyo out of the box, along with Mobile Hotspot. The original Droid Incredible will later receive these features in an upcoming firmware update.
Good to have some news on how HTC is doing due to Samsung suckage. Which also explains why EVOs are still sold out. But I thought the EVO had a standard TFT display and you totally have the sizes wrong on the Evo and Incredible. Evos got a 4.3″ and the Incredible has a 3.7″ screen. But other than that good story.
We replaced one paragraph in the article that erroneously referred to the EVO 4G. It is not involved in this article, and was spliced from another draft. Apologies for the confusion there.
what is your source on the last paragraph?
“It will also likely include Android 2.2, Froyo out of the box, along with Mobile Hotspot. The original Droid Incredible will later receive these features in an upcoming firmware update.”
We do not disclose sources, something that recent events have only prompted us to redouble our efforts to protect.
If they put an LCD in my Incredible, I’m returning it. I might as well just get the X if I’m getting an LCD.
Well is this just a rumor that the Incredible will run Android 2.2 out of the box or is it definitely confirmed? I can’t find reports anywhere confirming this information.
Verizon isn’t changing new models right? I just ordered one.

I laugh at this because if Apple were to do anything like this everyone would be fired up and getting their pitchforks and torches out.
HTC needs to get their act together and supply their current line sufficiently before kicking out 25 new models before year’s end (yes, 25 is an exaggeration, but not by much I bet LOL)
I hope mine comes as spec’ed. I ordered it at a verizon store on June 8th, under the assumption it would be shipped by June 25th, as stated by Verizon. I called the verizon store on the 25th to get my tracking number and they told me it would be shipped by the 29th, and to called back then. I called back today, the 29th, and still no tracking number. I could have acquired a new iPhone by now, fashioned my own phone out of random item from around the house. I’ve waited a while now, so if it comes with different components, I will officially be super-ultra-mega-upset. That is the highest level of upset known to mankind.
So what is the main difference between a super tft and an amoled? So is the screen on the incredible better than the one on the evo?
The screen on the Droid Incredible is AMOLED, which is considered a better display technology than TFT. Think of it as the difference between an OLED HDTV and an LCD HDTV.
The “Super TFT” will simply be a very powerful LCD meant to rival the AMOLED screen that was in the original Droid Incredible hardware revision. And no, we haven’t seen it, so we can’t tell you how much HTC is shortchanging new customers with the downgrade.
(And we also have no idea if there will be a price cut or not to make up for it, sorry).
What will this change do to the battery life?

Some on other sites are misrepresenting a part of this article. Any software upgrade that would ship on the new revision to the Droid Incredible would also be offered to the original Droid Incredible.
When one Droid Incredible revision gets Android 2.2, so will the other revision. It’s not clear if there will need to be a separate Droid Incredible firmware files, but both clearly will be updated with future Android updates at the same time.
I actually reposted the article, but reposted it word for word with no intention to misrepresent anything. I’m not sure how it’s being misrepresented when I copied directly from what you posted.
“It will also likely include Android 2.2, Froyo out of the box, along with Mobile Hotspot. The original Droid Incredible will later receive these features in an upcoming firmware update.”
Is that misrepresented?
It’s pointless to get defensive here, we were mostly referring to the phased rollout of Android updates and Google’s FOTA process. If there is a time gap between when new Droid Incredibles ship with Android 2.2, and original revision units are updated, it will be minor.

Chris – sorry if it came about as defensive. I was just trying to understand how I misrepresented, I wanted to represent it as it was stated. If you can help to clarify that I will correct my posting.
Mostly we were responding to comments that inferred that Android 2.2 was not coming to the original revision, from people that clearly never read the article.

If I can’t get my hands on the model that has the AMOLED screen, then I will definitely be selecting a different phone to go with.
