New preliminary information has surfaced regarding the launch of the HTC Hero 2, destined for Sprint and HTC Desire for AT&T.
According to the information available, AT&T will retain the Desire branding for the Android device, keeping inline with the international branding laid out by HTC, though the color and bodyshell finish will likely change to suit AT&T’s specifications while keeping the previously confirmed specifications of the international model.
Specifications for the HTC Desire consist of the Snapdragon platform with the processor clocked at 1 GHz, a 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display and Android 2.1 with HTC Sense along with 512 MB ROM and 576 MB of RAM, quadband GSM/EDGE and triband HSPA, Android 2.1 with the newest version of HTC’s Sense user interface, GPS transceiver, proximity and ambient light sensors, accelerometer and digital compass.
Going further, the device will include Bluetooth 2.1 with stereo audio support, Wi-Fi radio, 3.5mm stereo jack, microUSB connector and 5.0 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. The HTC Desire on AT&T is scheduled for release within the May-June timeframe.
In related news, Google will be directly selling the AT&T 3G compatible version of the Nexus One via its online storefront, but AT&T will be selling the Desire alongside it within its sales channels.
Following up, Sprint will be releasing the HTC Legend as the HTC Hero 2. As with the previous version in the Hero, the Hero 2 will be modified by Sprint to keep it inline with its own specifications, meaning a change in bodystyle inline with Sprint’s past HTC models compared to the more radically styled international versions.
Hardware specifications are expected to remain largely unchanged from the aforementioned version, save for the switch from the GSM/W-CDMA radio to the CDMA radio and consist of a 3.2 inch HVGA resolution capacitive touch screen display and a 600 MHz CPU with the same version of Android and HTC Sense as the Desire.
The device will also ship with 512 MB of ROM and 384 MB of RAM, GPS transceiver, proximity and ambient light sensors, accelerometer and digital compass along with Bluetooth 2.1 with stereo audio support, Wi-Fi radio, 3.5mm stereo jack, microUSB connector and a 5.0 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash.
There is no release timeframe for the Sprint HTC Hero 2 at this time.
When is Sprint going to get a top tier Android phone? The Nexus One will be released on every carrier except Sprint, Verizon has the Droid, and AT&T is getting the Desire. Hopefully that rumored WiMAX phone delivers…
The rumored wimax phone will be a top tier phone. It will have the same processor as the nexxus plus it will have htc sense which is one of the best features on any htc phone. People should already know, just because a phone is awesome doesn’t mean it is going to be good unless it gets on a network that allows you to use to its fullest.
Just look at the iphone, it is a great phone but att makes it an ok phone. So just because att is getting nexxus it doesn’t mean that sprint is behind. Any phone works better on sprint or verizon than on att.
I am still waiting for Sprint to release the Nextel Android phone since Sprint is no longer making hybrid cdma/evdo/iden ptt devices.
[…] version of the Nexus One later this year. And as if that weren’t enough for Android fans, new information suggests the wireless carrier will also launch its own version of the HTC Desire in or around […]
Right now Sprint doesn’t have a flagship phone. The Palm Pre was its flagship phone, but Verizon got a better model.
ATT has the Iphone
Tmobile (Sort of) has the Nexus One
Verizon has the Droid and now the Palm Pre Plus
And Sprint has, well…. nothing really unique at this point.
Time for Sprint’s CEO Mr. Hesse to get off his ass and make Sprints line up top notch again. There is no use of a 4G wimax HTC phone thats full of bugs and gets one update in its whole lifetime. I know that google will support the nexus one for years to come, they have too. But with HTC, its likely 1 update in its lifetime and then they expect you to buy a new phone.
Sprint should demand regular android updates of its HTC phones from HTC. Look at the iphone 2G, its still getting updates going on year 3 soon.
On another subject.
Microsoft also has committed to a NON exclusive carrier model unlike Apple in the USA. Tim Cook recently stated that Apple makes a ton more money with non carrier exclusives, but I guess their making enough money here in the USA that they don’t need anymore 😛
The Supersonic will be Sprint’s flagship phone…….
Why is it that no matter what phone or carrier these threads blab…er…blog about they always degenerate to the lowest common denominator… Sprint? I have or have had service with T-Mo, VZW and AT&T but personally don’t give an avian rodent’s posterior about Sprint.
