During AT&T’s own concurrent Developer Summit held during CES, the carrier has announced future support and implementation of the WebRTC communication standard throughout its products and services. The goal behind the integration is to ease enterprise management of communications services without having to rely on third-party products that may not inter-operate with existing paid services.
The AT&T Enhanced WebRTC API is now available in an open beta and offers several enhancements to the basic WebRTC standard. The first enhancement is that Enhanced WebRTC communications can now extend to land lines and mobile numbers, not just P2P or browser-to browser sessions, greatly expanding availability of users and clients. In AT&T’s case, the extension will allow customers to assign mobile numbers for browser based video and voice calls instead of using generic identifiers to make sessions easier to manage.
