Despite what many are reporting, you will not be able to buy an XPERIA X1 on September 30. That date is for customers in select European countries.
However, Sony Ericsson did today confirm that the XPERIA X1 will ship in the fourth quarter… of this year. Dates for launch of the device have varied wildly, from mid-September, stretching all the way to January.
The company did not, however, announce any carrier partnerships for the device in the United States. While designed in cooperation with HTC, the device will face hightened competition from the HTC Touch Diamond (which will launch as the Fuse on AT&T), as well as the HTC Touch Pro. Unlike the Diamond and Pro, both of these devices will be available on CDMA.
Despite the ease of producing a CDMA unit (thanks to HTC’s modular design), Sony Ericsson has decided to not launch a CDMA unit in the United States, holding steadfast to their decision to halt North American CDMA devices since 2003.
At CTIA Wireless IT 2008, Sony Ericsson has officially launched a Software Developer Kit (SDK), which will allow developers to adapt applications to work with Sony Ericsson’s paneled application launcher, which runs atop Windows Mobile 6.1.
