In a press release today, Motorola has announced that it has completed the first successful packet-switched VOIP calls and streaming video handoffs from an EVDO Rev. A base station to an LTE base station without any interruption in service.
The handoff was completed by building handsets and equipping laptops with dual CDMA 1xEVDO Rev. A and LTE radios, with the devices switching back and forth between Rev. A and LTE without packet loss. The successful handoffs were meant as an exercise in Motorola’s expertise with OFDM and IP-based technology, and as a test for carriers interested in LTE and starting discussions about deploying LTE without affecting service quality or impacting current infrastructure investments.
The Vice President of Network Services for Alltel, Chris Smith was also present at the test and commented positively regarding the result stating that it gives Alltel confidence that LTE is moving in the right direction, and interoperability with the existing network will play a major part in the final decision-making process for the company to decide on a 4G platform.
Motorola will be present at CTIA to demonstrate the aforementioned inter-standard handoff, and PhoneNews.com will be there providing complete coverage.
