Verizon has officially announced the forthcoming launch of the successor to the 9 month old and now discontinued Motorola Droid in the Droid 2. The device will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow before its official launch on Thursday for $199.99 after rebate, with those eligible for an upgrade this year able to upgrade to this or any smartphone without penalty
The Droid 2 features several upgrades from the original Droid with a 1GHz TI OMAP processor, improved hardware QWERTY keyboard, slight resolution increase to 854×480 resolution on its capacitive touch display, DLNA support for media streaming, and support for Verizon’s $20 per month Mobile Hotspot service as it runs the feature complete version of Android 2.2. The rest of the featureset consists of 8GB of built-in flash memory with additional 8GB microSD card, 5.0 megapixel camera with autofocus, video recorder and LED flash along with 3.5mm jack.
