The Wi-Fi and WiGig Alliances have jointly agreed to create wireless technology and standards to allow the transmission of data at speeds of 1Gbps and higher, with development aimed at utilizing the 60GHz frequency for data transfer.
The new standard will also feature seamless handoffs to Wi-Fi networks operating on the 2.4 and 5GHz bands in order to allow near continuous data transfers without interruption while maintaining backward compatibility via tri-band equipment development and certification.
No word was given regarding a timetable for the ratification of the new standard at this time.
