Recently, reports had begun to surface that Verizon Wireless had been charging soldiers and other personnel involved with the rescue and recovery effort in Haiti for phone calls received in and made from the country.
With Verizon Wireless having previously announced free calling to/from Haiti, the situation was initially seen as a PR blunder by the company, with one representative initially suggesting that the affected party sign up for an interational roaming plan.
After an internal investigation, it was discovered that many phonecalls made by customers were being listed as made in Jamaica via Verizon’s billing system despite the service provider being based in Haiti.
To that end, Verizon Wireless is waiving all charges incurred by customers affected by the situation, with the carrier affirming that all calls made from and to Haiti from the US will remain free of charge.
