Verizon has updated their smartphone data block for older devices. The change enables older smartphones to use MMS and picture messaging services, without paying for a data plan.
The carrier has mandated that smartphone customers carry a data plan for years now. However, there is an exception to that rule… which is notable because of the rise of alternatives in wireless data. Smartphones launched prior to the BlackBerry Storm can continue to operate with a data block, meaning no data is charged per month. However, previously, this also inadvertently shut these devices off from using MMS data. Today, Verizon is changing that.
And now, for the rest of this article, we’ll tell you why you may want to downgrade your Verizon smartphone.
There are many combinations for Verizon customers looking to pair a Virgin MiFi instead of paying exorbitant tethering charges. For example, you can use a Verizon feature phone or older smartphone, the data block, and a Virgin Mobile MiFi. From there, it’s an easy step to add in an iPod touch or even an Android/webOS smartphone in Airplane Mode.
One way to work the system is to upgrade to a Droid 2, then swap back to a Verizon XV6800, or earlier smartphone. From there, re-add the data block, and fire up your MiFi. Now your Droid 2, and XV6800 both are getting unlimited data from your MiFi… as well as your iPad, iPod touch, notebook… you get the idea.
Congratulations, you now have a Droid 2, a second smartphone, and a MiFi with unlimited data… for less money than Verizon’s $50 tethering-and-handset data plan. The only downside? Pocket space. But this divergence from convergence will save you at least $120/year, and net you unlimited (tethering) data in the process.

Well that’s all well and good, but my old Moto Q doesn’t have Wi-Fi.
Hi Christopher thank you for the post. Also note, that VZ Navigator and Family Locator can also continue to be used with the data block.
If you swap back to a Verizon XV6800, How do you use your new droid2? Do you use as media player without phone #?
The Droid 2 (or Droid X… or Pre Plus… you get the idea) would basically be in Airplane Mode. But, it wouldn’t be limited to being a media player, you can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth while in Airplane Mode. Think of it more as a mini iPad that fits in your pocket.
