Users have been reporting that some Verizon Wireless stores have been issued the 1.10 firmware update for the Verizon Wireless Treo 700p. This update has only been officially released on Sprint, after which the update fried phones.
The 1.10 firmware update has been extremely delayed. Palm has apologized several times for delaying the release of the maintenance update beyond the device’s successor; the Treo 755p. The Treo 755p launched on Sprint even before the Treo 700p was updated on Sprint. Now, Verizon 700p owners will finally get their update.
While Palm re-issued the firmware update for Treo 700p units, and has indicated that they will replace failed units, Verizon appears unwilling to take that chance. By making the update in-store only, technicians can ensure that the update is installed properly, and can pull the update quickly if there are further issues. In addition, if any phones are damaged, they can be quickly replaced on-site.
The update is being pushed slowly to stores. To ensure your store has the update, call your local store before going to it. Technicians may be able to manually download the update from Verizon’s intranet if they do not already have it in-store. Palm has yet to confirm availability of the 1.10 update for Verizon Treo 700p units.
