Verizon made waves with offering the first minutes-only 3G access with their NationalAccess network (using 1xRTT). Now, Verizon will offer EV-DO pricing that matches their aircard plans. Verizon has turned on similar tracking technology that is used in Sprint phones, and will deny EV-DO tethering to users that do not have the $60/unlimited plan on their account.
However, Verizon’s implementation of the system is lacking in many areas. First, Bluetooth tethering is not permitted. On some phones, Bluetooth DUN has been blocked, on others, it is not. We can confirm that on phones such as the un-updated Motorola E815 (with original firmware) that the ability to tether without the $60 plan remains intact. Others have found that with simple commands sent to their LG VX8000/8100/9800 that Bluetooth DUN can be enabled as well.
The Treo 700w does not support tethering currently, and the XV6600/XV6700 will be able to continue tethering (with their existing PDA plans).
