After first being confirmed by the FCC last month in talks, the federal regulator and the carrier have reached a settlement whereby the amount paid out in the settlement will total $25 million paid to the US Treasury while crediting customers $52.8 million in bill credits to settle the longstanding complaints of erroneous data charges on handsets.
Going forward, Verizon is offering customers 50KB of data to avoid accidental data charges in the future, though the carrier does offer data blocking and other tools to manage data access. The issue is estimated to have affected up to 15 million customers from 2007 until now, with Verizon blaming preloaded software.
