Addressing uninformed speculation that Verizon would be abandoning its long-supported BREW platform after yesterday’s announcement that the carrier would deploy Java Micro Edition, spokesperson Jeffery Nelson has reiterated that Verizon would be supporting Java and BREW simultaneously.
Nelson went on to elaborate that BREW would still be used for its non-smartphone devices in its current implementation, with the focus on Java development centering on the BlackBerry and moving from there.
Verizon’s push for Java development comes as it spearheads its new Open Development Initiative (ODI) along with its venerable “Any App, Any Device” initiative led by Tony Lewis, Verizon’s vice president of open development.
