Verizon has announced that it will begin to offer V CAST Video service for its lineup of Android devices beginning tomorrow afternoon with the launch of a newly developed application that will stream content from its partners, with the launch coming five days before the start of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. Interestingly, Verizon is focusing the announcement on the aforementioned event as one of the major US broadcast partners for the event in Univision will be the only US broadcast partner to carry all 64 matches in the tournament over the air and via V CAST Video.
This also marks the availability of V CAST Video on a major smart device platform other than the BlackBerry as Windows Mobile users on Verizon have been constantly denied access to the service despite compatibility, as the service was developed using Windows Media technology. The app itself will be free with an additional $10 monthly cost for the service.
The app is available on the Android market now. It reported less than 50 downloads thus far when I hit the download button earlier this evening.
You won’t find it yet on the Verizon tab of the Android Market. To get the app, search the Android Market for V CAST. It should then appear.
Beyond that, can’t say much, I have little-to-no interest in giving Verizon another $3/day or $10/month to watch the limited content… I prefer counting the days until SlingPlayer Android instead.
And, as suspected, V CAST Video is now showing up in the Verizon tab on the Android Market.
