Verizon Wireless this week began supporting Motorola Software Update (commonly known as MSU). MSU enables users to update the software and firmware in their phones at home, using a standard USB cable and a Windows PC.
Updating phone software has become a focus of the wireless industry. While PhoneNews.com has been advocating increased access to software updates for years, the industry has just started to move to actually encouraging software updates for phones. This comes as carriers realize the benefit of extending the longevity of devices (thus increasing ARPU without incurring subsidies on new devices).
To launch Verizon’s support for Motorola Software Update, they have added a software update for the Motorola RAZR maxx Ve. The software update, version 1.53.00, makes unknown improvements, but likely parities improvements made in software updates issued for the Motorola KRZR and SLVR (which the RAZR maxx is based on).
Verizon last month deployed firmware over-the-air updating for the first time, which will also encourage users to update their phones.
