Sprint has launched the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition smartphone.
As we
previously reported, this phone is the first CDMA/GSM
dual-mode BlackBerry device on Sprint.
What makes this version different from the Verizon version is the fact
that it is being sold SIM unlocked, and is the first consumer oriented
BlackBerry device on Sprint with a microSD slot (2GB cards are supported
correcting the previously released Fact Sheet), GPS support, landscape
QVGA display, media player with management software, Bluetooth 2.0, and
speakerphone.
The device only supports GSM 900/1800, and is meant
strictly for international roaming, but a provisioned SIM will be
provided if the customer chooses to keep the home number abroad, though
it is best to pick up a local prepaid SIM for lower rates.
The phone is now available online with a retail launch scheduled for
the middle of this month, and is priced at $299.99 after $250 instant
discount and new 2 year agreement, with an additional $100 mail-in
rebate bringing the total cost down to $199.99.
