Following on the heels of our BlackBerry coverage of the launch of Sprint’s 7130e, Sprint this morning announced that they will offer EV-DO on the existing 7250. BlackBerry 7250 units shipping today will be EV-DO enabled, and existing devices that do not yet have EV-DO will be upgradeable.
While Sprint announced the EV-DO update for existing 7250 units, they did not say when the update would be available beyond “later this year”. This would make the 7250 the only device Sprint chose to upgrade via software to EV-DO. Sprint aborted a promised update to the PPC-6600 Series that would have added EV-DO to that device earlier this year.In related news, Sprint today announced that they are also selling RIM’s BlackBerry Smart Card Reader. This is a Bluetooth device that transmit smart card clearance data wirelessly to a BlackBerry, providing for enhanced layer of security aimed at government and financial markets.
