Following up on the announcement of the Torch, RIM has also announced the formal debut of the BlackBerry 6 development platform and confirmed that OS 6 will be made available as an update for the Bold 9700, Bold 9650, and Pearl 3G pending the necessary carrier approvals. RIM has officially dropped the BlackBerry OS name for its operating system in favor of the BlackBerry name for the device and software going forward, in order to simplify naming conventions for its products and to eliminate the separation between operating system and hardware.
