Citing unamed sources, Bloomberg is reporting that beleaguered smartphone platform developer and manufacturer Palm is retaining Goldman Sachs and Qatalyst Partners for a potential sale of the company and seeking bids, with HTC and China’s Lenovo Group showing interest in a purchase.
An announcement regarding a sale of the company could come as soon as this week, following dismal financial results relating to much lower than expected sales of its flagship Palm Pre smart device.
As a result, Sprint and Verizon are offering their respective Pre and Pixi versions at steep discounts to boost sales while AT&T is preparing to launch its versions later this year. Speculation is also running high that HTC may strongly consider a purchase of Palm in order to reinforce its patent portfolio against Apple regarding patents, with both companies involved in a suit.
