Apple is set to begin a full-scale rollout of a new iPhone 5C display repair service beginning on Monday according to 9to5Mac, whereby customers will be able to have their phones fixed for a nominal fee instead of replacing phones for full retail price.
Whole unit replacement was previously necessary and usually meant that owners would have to purchase new phones along with dealing with the hassles of reinstalling apps and reconfiguring settings. The new service follows months of testing at selected Apple Store locations and will launch across the Apple Store retail footprint, with locations in Hong Kong and Canada currently being excluded from the service.
The issue with rolling out such a repair service for the iPhone prior to tomorrow’s planned rollout had to do with sourcing enough replacement display assemblies to satisfy the expected demand for the service, with display repairs being limited to the 5C for the time being, while 5S display repair services are still being tested at selected Apple Store locations. The display repair service for the 5C is expected to cost $149 for those owners out of warranty or an additional AppleCare plan attached to the phone, while those with a current warranty or AppleCare+ plan will only pay $49.
