Open webOS Beta Released Ahead of Next Month’s 1.0 Release

By Humberto Saabedra on August 31, 2012

Open webOS Desktop Beta Ubuntu

The Open webOS Project in another blog post that it has released the Beta version of the operating system, on time and one month before the expected release of the 1.0 milestone release which the Beta is leading towards, with today’s release targeted on Ubuntu Linux.

Key features of the Beta include the following additions of Open Embedded development environment support for developers to use without having to disrupt workflows on both desktop and mobile, an ARM emulator running core services such as db8 and node.js as well as work on a future complete OE Core image which boots to System Manager and the full webOS environment for more comprehensive development options on development machines.

The desktop build also brings together all of the elements released so far on the Ubuntu desktop. The improved System Manager now has support for applications, including the Core Applications such as Calendar and Contacts, with their underlying Synergy services with many 3rd party Enyo apps supported too. More work has also been done on the derivative Community Edition for the HP TouchPad by adding compatibility with LunaCE and other core features, such as new Gestures and Card Stack Tabs.

Finally, HP is continuing to hire staff for Open webOS following the previous internal leak of the newly formed spinoff dedicated to Open webOS with more announcements due next month on the direction of webOS once the milestone 1.0 release is announced.
