Novatel has announced in a press release the forthcoming launch of a new networking product for 3G access that leverages built-in Wi-Fi radios on laptops.
The MiFi consists of a family of smart routers, the size of a couple of stacked credit cards, that connect to the Internet via EVDO or UMTS and offer advanced functionality such as creating a Wi-Fi profile in an operating system without needing specific drivers or other software, connecting multiple devices, or a team of travelers.
MiFi devices also support custom broadband applications built by carriers or third-parties with a claimed 40 hours of standby time and 4 hours of use from its internal battery without external power.
The devices are expected to be launched pending carrier interest and approval in the first half of next year for around $200 before carrier subsidies.
