As expected, Nokia has announced that it has completed the acquisition of the Scalado imaging R&D firm after first announcing its intentions to purchase the firm last month. While the firms core IP, development teams and Nokia exclusive technology will be integrated into Nokia itself, the firm is still expected to maintain a separate division for its current agreements with HTC and RIM which were not included in the Nokia purchase.
The completion of the purchase means that the Scalado staff will form the basis for a new imaging R&D division based in Sweden which will work directly with the core Nokia imaging and PureView R&D teams based in Finland. Financial details of the acquisition will remain confidential and the deal is expected to shore up one of Nokia’s few bright spots, as the struggling manufacturer still holds a significant advantage in camera phones, with the 808 PureView being the current class leading cameraphone. Key to the Scalado acquisition is the expansion of the PureView imaging technology with Scalado’s R&D expertise for future integration into Windows Phone 8.
