Not long after announcing that it would end direct to consumer sales of the Nexus One last weekend, Google has posted a message on its former sales portal that the device is no longer available for purchase directly from the company. A link to research other avenues for purchase is provided.
The Nexus One was Google’s attempt at an end run around carriers and was meant to serve as an example of the vision Google had for Android as a whole with open hardware and software access, with the option to purchase hardware outright without carrier customizations or restrictions. The device was one of the most powerful Android devices available when launched in January with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and OLED capacitive touch display before being superseded by carrier developed models, leading to the cancellation of a planned CDMA version.
