As is typical with Verizon phones, the original Motorola DROID will receive a rollup release.
Despite competitors offering three years of firmware updates, Motorola appears to have ended firmware updates for the original DROID after only two major updates. The device was the first to ship to Android 2.0, and was subsequently updated to Android 2.1 (Eclair), before being updated to Android 2.2 (Froyo).
Typically, Verizon logs issues after issuing the last major upgrade, and follows with a maintenance release that rolls up lingering issues noted following the final major update for a device. This was seen with the HTC DROID ERIS as well, however, a couple of issues slipped through, including bugs affecting the dialer pad. While PhoneNews.com reported those issues to Verizon Wireless, the company’s update pattern has indicated they will not be resolved.
The update coming to the Motorola DROID will patch issues with Exchange ActiveSync, as well as update bundled applications (Amazon MP3 and Twitter). The application will also include an updated Gmail application, possibly from the Gingerbread branch. Finally, while unclear, it is likely that the update will also deliver Android 2.2.1 to the device.
