The MeeGo project has announced the availability of a barebones developer release of the newly merged MeeGo operating system, with more specific details coming in the next few days leading up to the first milestone release in May. The downloads are available here.
The release available today is the MeeGo distribution infrastructure and the operating system base from the Linux kernel to the OS infrastructure up to the middleware layer and does not feature a user interface, instead booting into a terminal prompt, with the images compatible with Intel Atom-based netbooks, the ARM-based Nokia N900, and Intel Atom-based handsets based on the Moorestown platform.
The images can be used to boot devices via a tethered boot, over the wire from USB. Also, PC netbooks can boot into the MeeGo developer release via USB flash drive. This allows for people to get their feet wet with the prototype platform, without having to format their hard drives or remove their current operating system.
