PhoneNews.com can confirm that Apple is preparing to release an new revision of the MacBook Air. While that in and of itself is not a surprise to many, we can confirm some of the specifications of the unit.
Much of the MacBook Air’s external design will not change. However, the internals will receive a significant revision from the initial release back in January. The MacBook Air is currently powered by a custom version of the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, from the Merom-class. That processor had been modified with a lower voltage process to conserve power.
The new MacBook Air however, will trade that CPU out for a standard Penryn-class Core 2 Duo. And, as such, the CPU will be able to dramatically increase, from 2.0 GHz and potentially beyond. As such however, power drain will increase. Apple will curb that constraint with a higher-capacity battery. However, we can confirm that the new MacBook Air will require a 60W power adapter to fully charge, much like the current MacBook family.
In fact, the new revision of the MacBook Air will draw it much more in-line with the current MacBook internals. Expect to see SSD prices in-line with the current revision, however the hard drive version of the MacBook Air will likely be upgraded to 120 GB, and optionally 160 GB, due to falling prices for 1.8-inch hard drives.
Announcement of this system has been reported to be imminent, with national retailers being alerted (under non-disclosure) to be prepared for the upgrade.
The MacBook Air is Apple’s first foray into the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) market. At its release, the machine claimed the title of the world’s thinnest notebook, and added new features such as a multi-touch trackpad. It is also the first modern Mac to lack an optical drive, a user-replaceable battery, as well as FireWire ports.

[…] soon? — It seems inevitable that Apple will update its super thin computer sometime soon, but a report by PhoneNews (and republished by Engadget) says the new version is imminent with Intel Core 2 Duo chip of the […]
How does this have anything to do with “phone news”?
UMPCs are what aircards and other systems connect to. Wireless data has always been reported on PhoneNews.com, and UMPCs certainly are at the forefront of how to leverage 3G, and soon, 4G data.
So what about all the other UMPCs that come out it seems weekly these days, I think this grabbed phonenews’ attention cause it has an apple on it. Just my opinion. I gave you props the other day for the FCC article, but I have to say I believe this is more apple propaganda, but like I said its just my opinion.
We’ve covered several UMPCs, from the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition, to the WiMAX-enabled Eee PC. We’ve covered Apple’s testing of WiMAX in the past, and you can find LTE counterparts to much of this coverage.
To say that we’re singling out the MacBook Air in this respect is simply false, and this is not the first time we’ve covered the MacBook Air specifically.
Well like I said its my opinion and you know what they say about those. Honestly I know we could go back and forth over this the fact that this is not the first time that you have covered the MBA specifically should tell you something. Despite the fact that those other UMPCs are WiMAX enabled and the MBA isn’t should tell ya that it’s not news about phones. That being said I can appreciate the fact that I read it hear first, and that it is a well written article. I am only questioning whether it is actual phone news or not, and that is all I am going to say about it.

I agree that the MBA news is appropriate on this blog. Personally, I haven’t seen an Apple bias here, but then again, because Apple articles tend to attract clicks and comments, it’s no surprise that tech and financial blogs seem to publish a lot of them. I think that the proliferation of anti-Apple commenters — some even boosting a blog’s metrics with multiple comments — may well be a driving force in the ubiquity and success of the Apple brand.

Does the MBA have a internal WLAN card? If its just because you can plug a card into it, you should also report on the new Dell Studio desktops and Dell Optiplex machines, and every other device that has a USB slot.

A faster processor is nice, but really a faster hard drive is what’s needed. My MBA is awesome, but the hard drive just can’t keep up when lots of apps are running (esp if I’m virtualizing and have apps running in both machines.)
4800RPM is a bit slow. SSD is no faster. Maybe this is state of the art, but it sure does slow everything down.

What’s missing is really connectivity for the traveler i.e. 3G and longer battery time so less perofmance and more battery would prob. be better.
New internals would be nice. The MBA Rev 1 used a parallel storage bus, not serial, so as advancements in SSD storage appeared on the market, a MBA owner could not leverage any new drives, since those drives were all SATA – serial. Clumsy design.
A higher capacity battery is really important to a portable product that can’t have it’s battery replaced. iPhone is just like this, too – why are they doing this? Clumsy and inconvenient. Sort of discounts what a portable is all about.
Paying $2500 or thereabouts for one lousy USB port is just too daft IMHO. I’d like to see a lightweight portable from Apple that is not crippled in functionality and IO.
Thin is nice but thinness in portable computing has not been a problem since the mid-1990’s, when laptops were 3″ and 4″ thick. They solved this years ago. Mac users deserve more than a stripped-down, de-featured, wafer-thin slice of aluminum with the cheapest LCD screen that the purchasing department can negotiate. Removing as much as you can is not innovation or creativity – it’s the cheap (probably highly profitable) and dirty way out.
The real challenge that requires thought, design expertise and innovation is delivering a smart featured computing experience in a lightweight portable environment. Get back to work in Cupertino and give us something meaty and worthwhile.
