HTC and the Car Connectivity Consortium have announced that the future Android 4.4.3 software update will make the One (M8) MirrorLink compatible. MirrorLink is a connectivity platform for pairing smartphones and cars that works across smartphone platforms and car manufacturers through aftermarket solutions. MirrorLink is the only vendor-neutral standard available, according to the CCC trade group.
With MirrorLink capability, the One (M8) will be able to connect to select in-car infotainment systems, allowing drivers to more safely access their phone when behind the wheel. The CCC hopes that with HTC’s support, more will choose to support MirrorLink as it’s unknown how many other manufacturers currently support the platform. HTC said it will add MirrorLink support to more devices in the future. MirrorLink joins Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto as competing standards for managing in-car entertainment and telematics support.
