After days of waiting for stability, PhoneNews.com is hosting all the tools you need, and a simple guide to add GPS navigation to your HTC Titan (PPC-6800, XV6800, or P4000). This guide is for all carriers: Alltel, Sprint, Verizon, Telus, and Bell.
Â
PhoneNews.com is always looking for additional workflows, guides, and processes. If you’ve got code, we’ve got the bandwidth. Just drop us an email.
Click Read More below for the process, and details. For discussion, please visit the active discussion on our forums, and this has been added to our HTC Titan Page on the Phone Encyclopedia.
Buy an XV6800 from Verizon Wireless
Installing this update will enable GPS to function inside your HTC Titan. It enables the gpsOne chipset in your device to function as a standard GPS device, compatible with Windows Mobile 5 & 6 GPS applications, including Google Maps, Windows Live for Mobile, and navigation software such as TomTom Navigator. Keep in mind that gpsOne is not autonomous GPS, you will need to have home network coverage in order to maintain a GPS lock.
Also, keep in mind that this software is not supported by HTC. it is expected that carriers will be releasing this functionality in a future update. If you are not comfortable with this process, do not proceed. To maintain your warranty, you will need to remove this software (by restoring your device) before sending the device in for warranty service.
There are two ways to accomplish this; the automated route, and the manual installation route. We are still working on automated installers for all variants of the HTC Titan, so please bear with us if your device is not yet completed.
Manual Installation Procedure
Keep in mind that all data on the device will be erased. Sync and backup all data on the device before proceeding.
This process has three steps:
1) Unlocking the device, so it supports unsupported firmware flashes
2) Updating the software of the device (to listen for GPS commands)
3) Updating the baseband radio firmware to enable GPS
For this, you will need a few files:
1) Hard-SPL-240-MFG.exe (this is the unlocker mentioned in the first step).
2) Titan_Radio_3.27.00.exe (this is the baseband radio firmware)
3) The software update for the Titan (chose your carrier from the link below)
DCD 2.1.0 – Alltel – This is not needed for Alltel anymore, click here for the official update
DCD 2.1.0 – Sprint – This is not needed for Sprint anymore, click here for the official update
DCD 2.1.0 – Verizon Wireless – This is not needed for Verizon anymore, click here for the official update
DCD 2.1.0 – Bell
DCD 2.1.0 – Telus
Here is the procedure for updating:
- Open Hard-SPL-240-MFG.exe. It will extract files into C:\ttn240mfg, and then launch an unlocker. Follow the instructions on screen.
- Once it has been completed, launch the device’s software update. Follow the instructions on screen for the updater.
- Following the updater’s final instructions, power cycle the device as instructed (holding power and reset buttons simultaneously). The device will likely freeze at startup on your carrier’s logo. This is normal.
- When the device does freeze, hold power, camera, and reset buttons. This will send the device into what is known as Bootloader Mode.
- Connect the Titan back to your computer. Run the baseband radio firmware update, similar to the instructions above.
- When finished, power cycle again as instructed, holding power and reset buttons to complete the update.
- The device should now have GPS enabled via the GPS utility in Start > Settings > System > External GPS. While it says External GPS, COM5 now routes back into the device’s internal network-assisted GPS functionality.
Update: To restore Office Mobile functionality, regardless of installer, this download from Microsoft has been reported to fix it.
The efforts of many people contributed to this process. We cannot thank them all individually, but we do acknowledge (and thank) the active HTC hacking community for these developments.
“Since I installed the new GPS+PDA+PHONE ROM, my device restarts all the time… I was forced to return to the original ROM. Anyone can help me? Or can I help to solve this issue? Thanks” — this was posted ealier and not answered, I am having the same problem. Are there any ideas yet?

In the external gps settings:
Is it port 4 on the “Programs” tab or port 4 on the “Hardware” tab?

“PhoneNews.com is hosting all the tools you need, and a simple guide to add GPS navigation to your HTC Titan…” “PhoneNews.com is always looking for additional workflows, guides, and processes. If you’ve got code, we’ve got the bandwidth. Just drop us an email.”
Did DCD or others drop you an email? Or does this site make a habit of ripping off other sources and neglecting to link to those sources, all to lock browsers, interest, and undo credit upon phonenews.com?
Christopher Price: “The efforts of many people contributed to this process. We cannot thank them all individually, but we do acknowledge (and thank) the active HTC hacking community for these developments.”
That’s a truly lame cop-out by one who is plodding out unspecified and general thanks, all to fabricate undeserved credit for the authorship of this ROM guide and its provision to the community. A greater sign of integrity would have been to report what is possible and then link to the sources of such information rather than rip much of it off and present it as his or this site’s labour of collection.
Christopher Price had an ego agenda to go out of his way to neglect linking to ppcgeeks.com and XDA-Developers — the fundamental sources and home for these ROM developments and direct posts and presentation of ROMs and fixes by DCD, no2chem, etc..
Much of this angst in the community that is directed at Christopher Price and phonenews.com could have been adverted if integrity was displayed by linking to the sources for this guide and ROMs.
Bbg, you obviously did not read any of the discussion that has gone on in this article. I have responded previously to each and every one of the points you have raised, and I will say again… there were a specific set of circumstances (as I’ve noted previously), that warranted giving credit in this manner.
I’ve spoken with the administrations of XDA-Developers, and PPCGeeks.com… we are on very good terms.
Nearly a month later, why does the reluctance remain against having this article edited for references to XDA-Developers and PPCGeeks?
“PhoneNews.com is hosting all the tools you need…” If you are not the source of information then it is only fair to the community to cite where it came from.
Bbg, we have credited DCD in our article update (read our latest coverage… search the news). And, much as we feared, people then complained that we needed to credit all the folks that “made DCD’s work possible”.
We predicted the response from the community which guided our decisions in this case. We feel we have credited the community, and DCD in particular, appropriately.
I just tried to update my ROM. I got as far as getting to the Radio software. First of all I’m not sure the Rom is locked back down. Two I have not got a clue how to do that. Three my screen is now a stripe red green and blue with white at the bottom. The phone appears to recognize when I plug in the USB. Other than that it’s not a phone right now. Any help would be appreciated. Thx!
I want to thank ALL of those that worked towards these roms.
I certainly want to thank PHONENEWS for this writeup. I had a good bit of time one the PPCGEEKS and XDA forums trying to decipher what I needed to do, but there just are enough hours in the day for me to wade through the conflicting info to get a remote understand of it all, so I had been ignoring it all.
(it didn’t help that the search functions on those sites are either broken or poor)
So thanks to this site, I was able to flash my 6800. And it is clear that the source of these roms is from numerous people that I also want to thank.
Carrying a GPS full time is awesome.
I recently added gps to my mogul and everything works great, but I am missing some features such as the voice activated command console. is there any info available about getting it back on my phone?
Agreed, what about the voice command?
I installed and use this ROM, works great. I also was able to install Verizon Wireless Sync and use with no problems. Additionally I installed the HTC Home plug and use that with no problems.
The question I have is: There is a ROM update at UT Starcom website for qwerty keypad fix. How will this work with this ROM posted here?
Thanks for all the work here, this is a good ROM!
GPS works great, I’m enjoying the new rom. Been using it for a day now and I think I like a lot of the little changes. The phone screen is a lot better for dialing.
As we reported on our coverage of the XV6800 keyboard fix, you do not need to install it on this ROM. These ROMs post-date the fix’s creation, and it has been included in the ROM itself.
Hey guys, I have been working with this all day long and am trying to get everything straight. I was a little disappointed in the whole thing. After reinstalling wireless sync I am still missing my Adobe Reader, Windows Update, and a Battery Meter. Does anyone know how to get these back??? Also my phone light is blinking yellow now, what does that mean and is there a way to turn it off?? And if worse comes to worse is there a way to just go to the verizon store and have them return it to original? I dont really like the new phone dialer at all or the media player, someone please help im kinda frustrated at this point
Great now I just noticed the voice button doesnt work anymore as well, but I did restart and not blinking yellow anymore. To let you know I have the Verizon xv6800 and it says I have ROM: 2.1.0 and Radio: 3.27.00 Forgot to mention also I am having the problem where it always says I am in North Carolina when using Live Search
please anyone, has anyone taken this back to verizon to get put back to original??? email me if you dont want to post, kportillo@smucayman.com
I finally got my XV6800 working using the manual method. I knew I did everything correctly but was banging my head against the wall to get google maps to find satellites. I finally re-read the postings this A.M. with a rested eye and saw that someone posted you must go to your “Comm Manager”, go to “Settings” select “Phone”, select “Services” select “location setting” push the button “get settings” and activate the “location ON” and click Ok. The reason I am reiterating this is because I think this one factor should have been STEP 4 on the original list at the top of the posting. It would have saved me a whole lotta scratching my head.
Final question to all….. Is anyone familar enough with GPStuner software to tell me if in theory it will work on my XV6800 now that is the GPSone chip is alive and well ? I have loaded GPStuner version 5.0 on my PDA and the features rock ! … EXCEPT… I cant get the software to see the GPS as of yet. Please e-mail direct if you please. firetaz39@hotmail.com
Wonderful teamwork on behalf of all those involved in the project.
the verizon store can do nothing but a hard reset which does nothing, going to call tomorrow, but I cant believe no one has answered my questions yet
called verizon and all they could do is refer me to ut starcom, which went on to say they can do nothing as well…. so does ANYONE here know how to go back to factory or do I need to find a way to cover this up and try and get a warranty exchange
YO FYI the DCD 2.1.0 – Alltel CRC test craps out on the dcd_titan_2.1.0_altel.nbh. QUESTION has anyone tested the file to see if it works? if it’s a bad load on the server then ok but this is one of the longest rants i have seen with only a few files to download. nothing goes to anyother file server at all that SUX!!!
Keith were are you at on your screen can you boot up wm at all or you in the bootloader still
s10onn2o: I completed everything and can boot up fine just like the original alot better and all my programs are missing
I too was missing some things. I manually installed the things back I wanted such as Adobe, Wireless Sync, and the Office Programs. The few things I couldn’t do I don’t need anyway such as the voice button which was always being accidentally pushed anyway! In all, this ROM was a major improvement, you just need to do your own tweaking and it takes time.
I also installed the HTC Home screen which is very slick, it contains a large clock and an iphone like home screen so you go in and remove you small clock at the top right part of your screen, by doing so you will get the battery icon there. Click on the batt icon and it will take you to power option.
If you want to take a look at it try this:

Each time I run dcd_titan_2.1.0_sprint.exe, I get an error “Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation. Where does one get a fresh copy?
hey perry dcd_titan_2.1.0_sprint.exe the one of the e’s on .exe is missing go in with winrar add it.
i went through Hard-SPL-240-MFG.exe’s final instructions and im stuck with a red, green, blue, and white screen. at the top it red it read TITA100 MFG SPL-2…….Olipro CPLD……RUUNBH etc. In the white at the bottom of the screen it read “serial” when the sync wire isnt connect, and usb when it is. ive tried taking the battery out and power cycling to no availe. not only that, titan_radio and dc_titan are giving me the same error message as Perry 2 comments up from me. i tried reinstalling windows 6.0 but its telling me my device isnt connected. should i throw my mogul in the toilet and sit on it or is there any hope for restoration?

Hey All,
I did the update as instructed. But I have a problem now. As the GPS works, the SMS (Texting) seems have problems now. Example, if you have SMS in the inbox, or sent items… after a soft reset, all the message are gone. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a WM6.0 DCD? WM6.1 takes so much memory that the device just freezes.
Thanks for the help. My Mogul is now up and running with GPS, however, I do have this one issue where on some occasions when I do a soft reset it hangs and I have to soft reset again before it will fully boot up.
I tried the procedure above and was stuck after running the first exe file. It tells you to re-establish a connection with the device, but Activesync no longer recognizes the device. So now I am stuck with red/green/blue/white bars. Hard boot doesn’t work, soft boot doesn’t work. Any help?
additional note on my previous post, I have a verizon XV6800
Ok I found my solution… you have to keep going even though it says to establish an activesync connection first (this turns out to be not required!). The tri-colored screen turns out to be the bootloder mode refered to in the instructions.
The instructions should include visuals so people don’t freak out.
After completing the procedure, Google Maps continued to hang up. So I randomly tried different gps program com ports. When I got to com3 it worked. So it seems that not every device works from com4.
did thed upgrade and now my phone part dont work can still use internet. what to do from here? thanks
I got my verizon xv6800 GPS working! One thing to note is when you’re at the tri-colored bootloader screen and it says ‘establish a connection with activesync’ as one of the things to do before continuing. This is actually not necessary. I was stuck on this part for a while. I could not get activesync to connect. I freaked out and pulled the battery out and back in and it booted back up back to normal (fhew!). I tried again later and had the same issue. I finally said screw it I’ll just check the box and keep going and it worked just fine. Just make sure your PC recognized the device. Same thing is true then next time it asks you. Mine didn’t hang up on the verizon logo like some have reported. The internet took a few minutes before it worked again but once it did I set my external GPS settings to COM5 and turned my phone location on then downloaded google maps mobile and chose use GPS. It took about 10 minutes the first time with the phone by a window to connect to 4 satellites. It is pretty sweet. The next few times I used it it started connecting to more satellites. Last time I was out it was using 11 satellites and was much faster at detecting it. The Verizon phone calling does not work after flashing. You have to call ##8899 and tell them you just did a hard reset and now its having you call to activate the phone service again. They’ll apologize and ask if they can call you on another line so you can update the device and talk at the same time. They’ll have you dial ##778 call, edit, 000000 service code, then a-key, edit, then they’ll provide you a long A-key number (wrote mine down too). You OK it, then update and reset and it is good to go. The phone call took 5 minutes with minimal questioning. Also, the new ROM DOES still have office mobile (excel, power point, word, and OneNote). In fact, I got this phone with windows mobile 6.0 and the ROM update got it up to 6.1, office mobile also looks upgraded. The ROM is nice too. Simple, but upgraded things that HTC probably should have done when they first released their ROM. I like the dial pad better and it has built in task manager, remote desktop app and enhanced threaded texting just to name a few things. Overall, I think I was more nervous then I needed to be. Hopefully this helps others..
Oh and I set up my push yahoo email with no problems. So far I haven’t noticed ‘losing’ any features that I had with the original ROM.
George great explanation to get it back up and running. I had just finished enabling the GPS on the BELL network and after flashing I had a fast busy. Called tech support and the ONLY thing they had to do was get me to reprogram my MDN and MSID which is your own number. I had mentioned that I was syncing with my CPU when it just crashed and was not making calls after a soft reboot.
##911224# for the HTC on the BELL network in Ontario, Canada.
Cheers!
Notes for a smooth installation.
1) Remember to UNLOCK your phone prior to installation
2) FIND the DCD version 2.3.2 NOT 2.1.X
3) Don’t sweat the freeze after the FLASH just follow the above directions.
4) Find the code the initiates the ACTIVATION WIZARD on your phone for your provider. ex. ##911224# (edit the MDN and MSID)
5) Your MDN and MSID are your own cell number
6) Nuff Respect to PPCGEEKS, XDA-DEVELOPERS, PHONENEWS
7) Shame on HTC for not doing this themselves and Bell for not recognizing this feature
8) Thanks to SPRINT for posting this upgrade on there website
9) Enjoy!!
