Deal: Motorola Lapdock for Atrix 4G – $54.99 Shipped (Hackable to work with Droid RAZR, Bionic, Atrix 2)

Daily deal site 1saleaday is offering the Motorola Atrix 4G Lapdock for $49.99, plus $5 shipping for $54.99 total.

The lapdock is a unique early-adopter feature that uses a hypervisor in all new advanced Motorola smartphones called Motorola Webtop. The hypervisor launches a full Linux environment complete with desktop Firefox and Adobe Flash. The lapdock then facilitates a laptop-style interface for accessing web content, using your phone’s hotspot/tethering plan.

However, the hacking potential for Webtop is much greater. Any rooted Webtop phone can then run any Linux application compiled for ARM, including Google’s Chromium core browser.

The Atrix lapdock is not initially compatible with newer phones, like Atrix 2, DROID RAZR, and DROID BIONIC. This can be resolved by removing a few screws, and simply rotating around the lapdock’s connector. We’ve done this ourselves, and it is easy enough to complete in about 15 to 30 minutes.

In fact, we’ll post a photo how-to for those concerned about the difficulty of the process. If you’re tech-savvy, and you like bleeding-edge technology, the Lapdock is a great option for when your laptop runs out of power. It’s cheaper than most laptop batteries.
