Sprint today announced they would be the first U.S. carrier to provide support for a USB EV-DO “data card” solution. Many notebooks lack CardBus support (opting for either subnotebook status, or an ExpressCard slot which is incompatible). By offering a USB Mobile Broadband Card, Sprint will be able to offer service to more powerful laptops that have shed CardBus support.
The device will also enable less traditional devices to gain EV-DO support with much less extensive driver and customization support.
In addition, Sprint has also announced the first Release A data cards for EV-DO. Launching in the third quarter, the Merlin S720 and AirCard 595 will support the upcoming Release A network.
